Sugar Water - To Feed Or Not To Feed To Tired Bees? That is the question!

Putting sugar water dishes out for bees versus sugar water rescue - what is the right thing to do?

Tess Lorek from Save The Bees on Facebook has this advice!

(Posted with permission)

"Hi everyone! I am a beekeeper, and I along with a couple of great admins and other moderators, who are either beekeepers or people that have a lot of knowledge on bees would like to make a statement regarding the sugar water debate!

We appreciate everyone’s passion and caring of the bees. We know that there are different opinions regarding the sugar water, but it’s important that everyone is respectful to each other to create a positive environment in this group. It is a fact that disease can spread through bees when feeding bees sugar water. If you are feeding a struggling bee sugar water off a spoon, that is okay, just not leaving a sugar water feeder out for all bees.

Here are some good resources to read as far as sugar water feeding goes, and what consequences community sugar water feeding may bring.

We again want to thank you all for being so caring of the bees and remember to bee kind!!

Save the BEES Mugs3 ways you can help rescue bees

Bees pollinate one-third of the food that we consume; without them, we would be extinct. You may contribute to the cause by taking these three simple actions.

1. Create a Bee Garden using plants that are beneficial to bees.

2. Fill a small dish halfway with clean water and set it aside as a Bee drinking bath. Make a swarming area with pebbles and stones for the bees to land on and drink from.

3. Provide a safe haven for natural bees such as bumblebees, who do not live in hives and are solitary creatures. Provide a bee hotel in a calm, undisturbed location for them to use as a hive for constructing a colony. You may purchase these online, or you can make your own!
